If you are like millions of other active Americans, you know how painful tennis or golfer’s elbow can be. Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are similar conditions that cause pain, stiffness, and other symptoms at the elbow. Pain from these conditions increases with movement, so tennis and golfer’s elbow can interfere with your ability to work, go to school, or enjoy your favorite sports.

Medical professionals classify tennis and golfer’s elbow as overuse injuries, which occur as the result of repetitive motions.

About Tennis Elbow

Doctors refer to tennis elbow as lateral epicondylitis. Tennis elbow causes pain and burning on the outer side of the elbow. The condition may also weaken your grip strength.

Tennis elbow is often the result of damage to a specific muscle in the forearm, known as the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle. This muscle helps stabilize your wrist when your elbow is straight, like when you hit a groundstroke in tennis. Overuse of this muscle weakens it and leaves the tendon attaching the ECRB muscle to the elbow bone vulnerable to microscopic tears, resulting in inflammation and pain.

About Golfer’s Elbow

Medical professionals use the phrase medial epicondylitis when talking about golfer’s elbow. This condition causes pain and tenderness on the inside side of your elbow.

Golfer’s elbow is a condition characterized by inflammation of the tendons that attach the muscles of your forearm to the bone on the inside of your elbow. The force of the repetitive and strenuous motion, such as swinging a golf club, strains the forearm flexor muscles that meet in a common insertion point at the inside of your elbow. Straining these muscles and tendons repeatedly causes painful inflammation.

Chiropractic Care Effectively Treats Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow

Chiropractic adjustments can ease the symptoms of these elbow conditions and correct many underlying mechanical problems that increase the risk for the development of golfer’s or tennis elbow, or slow down the healing time associated with these conditions. Unlike other therapeutic approaches that focus solely on problems in your elbow, chiropractic care addresses mechanical problems occurring in your wrist and shoulder, as well as your elbow.

Chiropractic care effectively treats muscle tightness and spasms that are often associated with tennis and golfer’s elbow. Our chiropractors may perform muscle and soft tissue therapy technique that frequently provides dramatic and immediate pain relief results. Chiropractic care deals with the cumulative trauma caused by repetitive use.

Muscle release therapy is a chiropractic approach that reduces inflammation and relaxes muscle knots. Active and passive stretching exercises combined with direct pressure breaks up adhesions binding muscles and tendons.

Chiropractic adjustments loosen the elbow joint to relieve pain, restore proper joint movement, and increase your elbow’s range of motion. Chiropractic adjustments of the spine and of the wrist and elbow may be effective.

If you have tennis or golfer’s elbow, make an appointment with a chiropractor to find out if chiropractic treatment can reduce your symptoms.
