Century Center Chiropractic Can Provide Asthma Relief

Asthma affects as many as one in 13 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It keeps kids out of school, causes emergency room and hospital visits, and limits some people’s lives. A chiropractor may be able to help asthma by using chiropractic treatment strategies such as thoracic spine adjustments. At Century Center Chiropractic in Atlanta, we serve the Chamblee and Brookhaven areas, helping to relieve pain and restore function.

Asthma Basics

Air flows into and out of the lungs through the bronchial tubes. These tubes are lined with tissue that can become irritated and swell, causing an asthma attack. The tubes narrow, which reduces air flow in and out of the lungs. Asthma can be mild or severe and attacks can range from a slight wheeze to such severe breathing problems that emergency care is necessary. Attacks can be triggered by pollutants, cigarette smoke, pollen, pet dander and even cold weather. In addition, those with asthma may have trouble sleeping, be tired during the day, and become fatigued easily or even have trouble thinking.

Asthma and the Spine

At first glance, asthma doesn’t seem like a musculoskeletal condition. However, the spine supports the spinal cord and the nerves that control all body systems. If the spine is misaligned or movement in the spine is limited, it can affect the function of any organ system, including the lungs. This is particularly true of the thoracic spine to which the ribs attach. The nerves that exit the thoracic spine control your lungs and bronchial tubes. Many people today have poor posture, especially if they spend a lot of time at a desk or computer. Postural problems can contribute to thoracic spine misalignment.

Asthma and Chiropractic

A chiropractor doesn’t actually treat asthma – it’s a chronic disease that requires medical management with inhalers and other medications. However, a chiropractor can ensure that your thoracic spine is properly aligned and moving freely. If your thoracic spine is misaligned or the vertebrae don’t move correctly, it limits your lung expansion. Combine that with swollen bronchial tubes and it can make asthma attacks worse. Correcting alignment problems and freeing up the spine lets you take in and exhale the maximum amount of air possible. A chiropractor can also make recommendations for exercises to improve posture or suggest nutritional changes that can promote better health.
