One of the most common ailments in the U.S. is low back pain, and most will experience it in one way of another sometime in their lifetime. For some, it is something that flares up just occasionally. For others, it becomes a chronic issue that has them seeking out a chiropractor in Atlanta. Many find they are seeking low back pain treatment at younger ages than they expected. At Century Center Chiropractic in Atlanta, Georgia, low back pain is one of the biggest complaints that bring patients to our doors. Here are some questions we get about low back pain:

Am I too young to experience low back pain?

Low back pain can be experienced at almost any age due to a health condition or accident, however, low back pain treatment is available for all ages as well. In most cases, people start experiencing instances of pain sometime between age 30-50.

Why does my back hurt when I didn't do anything to injure it?

Another cause of back pain doesn't come from an incident, such as a car accident or lifting a heavy object. It can also be caused by not doing enough. Factors such as aging and a sedentary lifestyle can play a large role in low back pain.

If I have frequent back pain, does that mean I need surgery?

Not a lot of people like the idea of surgery and the good news is that with low back pain it can often be avoided. At Center Chiropractic, we offer many alternative low back pain treatment options. Our Atlanta chiropractor combines chiropractic adjustment, nutrition counseling, strength training and more to address your whole body needs that in many cases are enough to help your body heal itself.

What are the Most Common Causes of Low Back Pain?

Low back pain is frequently caused by several different things, the most common include:

Sudden movement while lifting heavy objects - This can cause pain that limits movement, and makes walking or standing difficult to near impossible. The pain itself is achy and dull, and may also include muscle spasms and soreness when touched.

Sciatica – This is characterized by low back pain that travels down a leg and into the buttock area. Sitting or standing still for long periods of time can make the pain feel worse, and walking can make it feel better. The pain has a burning and tingling feel, and may also include weakness or numbness. It occurs because the sciatica nerve root, located in the lower spine is compressed. In most cases, a lumbar herniated disc is to blame. Sciatica can also be brought on by degenerative disc disease, a slipped disc or other conditions. Pain in the lower back is generally constant but may spike during muscle spasms.
