Leg Pain Solutions from Our Chiropractor in Atlanta

man suffering from leg pain treated by our optometrist

Acute or chronic leg pain can deprive you of your ability to work, participate in athletics, walk properly or even sit comfortably. While some causes of leg pain are immediate and others, others can prove more perplexing and subtle in their origins, which may include referred pain from another part of the body entirely. Whatever the cause of your leg pain, you need to know what you can eliminate or manage this debilitating issue safely, non-surgically and without reliance on drugs. Our chiropractor in Atlanta, Dr. Jared Simon, can help you do just that at Century City Chiropractic.

Sciatica and Other Causes of Leg Pain

If you've just fractured or leg or pulled a muscle in an accident, you can figure out pretty quickly why your leg is hurting. But leg pain can also prove highly mysterious and elusive, not least because it is often referred pain -- pain sent to the leg along a nerve pathway from another area that is actually the one in distress.

Perhaps the most well-known example of referred leg pain is sciatica, a neurological problem caused by impingement of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the main conduit for all sensory of motor data from the spinal cord to the many parts of the leg and foot; when the major nerve roots that anchor it to the spinal cord become pinched due to a herniated disc or other disorder, those signals can get scrambled or cut off. Resulting sciatica creates not only leg pain but also numb areas, tingling sensations, and loss of motor control in the affected extremity.

Other musculoskeletal dysfunctions can also create leg pain. For example, if your body is off-balance due to a spinal misalignment, the muscles and connective tissues of one leg may be under abnormal stress, causing chronic muscle strain and tendinitis. Degenerative joint pain originating in the spine or hip joints can also radiate into the legs.

The Chiropractic Approach to Relief

Chiropractic care may be able to relieve you of that agonizing leg pain -- and even help you keep it from coming back. Our chiropractor in Atlanta will evaluate your musculoskeletal alignment, looking at everything from apparent leg length differences too obvious signs of herniated discs, spinal stenosis or other issues. Manual or instrument-based adjustments can shift your body back into its preferred alignment, freeing muscles from overuse and taking the pinch-off of pinched nerves. Flexion-distraction therapy can help relieve sciatic nerve pressure due to herniated discs and other obstructions, ridding you of those uncomfortable symptoms. Periodic screenings and adjustments can then help you maintain optimal musculoskeletal alignment and function for life.
