Hiatal Hernia: A Hidden Culprit Behind Chronic Illness

That feeling of discomfort you get after a meal, sometimes accompanied by heartburn, mild to moderate recurring chest pains, and even breathing problems and anxiety may be caused by a common condition known as hiatal hernia. It can be a nagging condition that plagues you for years, or it may cause severe discomfort only occasionally.

Relieving the Pain of Hiatal Hernia

Common wisdom for hiatal hernia pain relief includes monitoring your food intake, avoiding large or heavy meals, maintaining a healthy weight and getting plenty of exercise. While those are sensible recommendations for most people, avoiding foods that cause problems -- citrus, dairy, fatty or fried foods, caffeine and alcohol, carbonated beverages, spicy foods and tomatoes -- may leave you with an unnecessarily bland diet.

Century Center Chiropractic in Atlanta offers another option. Hiatal hernia involves an "abnormality" of the stomach at its conjunction with the diaphragm and the "hiatus," the opening to the esophagus. When the hiatus functions improperly, it can allow stomach acids to "backflow" into the esophagus, causing discomfort. It has been found that a manual adjustment can occasionally cause immediate relief, and can mitigate mild symptoms effectively over a period of time.

Manually realigning the stomach can be done while standing or lying on a table; the procedure can cause mild discomfort, but it is a safe, natural, drug-free therapy. Multiple treatments may be necessary, and our clinic will work with you to provide lasting results, sometimes also utilizing other techniques.

Additional therapy that can be employed by our chiropractor in Atlanta includes manipulating the muscles in the rib cage to relieve tension on the diaphragm, and performing adjustments on the nerves in the neck and mid-back that affect the diaphragm. Continuing relief from the acid reflux, breathing problems and general discomfort of hiatal hernia may be gradual rather than dramatic, and certain lifestyle changes may also be necessary.

When the only other treatment known for relieving the condition involves surgery, it certainly makes sense to explore chiropractic treatment, doesn't it? May we schedule an appointment for you
